Cellulosic-Char based Soil Amendments

Scientific Soil amendments improve soil biological efficiency by enhancing nutrient retention, increasing water absorption, facilitating pH Management, and increasing microbial activity. Cellulosic soil amendments deliver science-based solutions to help farmers, ranchers, foresters, and other land managers effectively manage, conserve, and enhance their most valuable asset — the soil.

Biochar has been used in agriculture for more than 2,500 years. Transitioning cellulosic wood waste into char-soil supplements is environmentally preferable to transporting agricultural and forest waste to landfills or open pile burning.

Soil amendment production is a more environmentally friendly process than using traditional wood chip-and-grind operations. Studies show that chip-and-grind operations generate almost four times the amount of PM 2.5 emissions compared to Soil amendment production processes. Diatomaceous earth is blended into the char when it is cooled to increase the silica content of the soil amendment, along with other composted organic materials that biologically interact with the cellulosic char.

Scientific Soil product benefits:

  • Improve soil aggregate stability and habitat for soil organisms.
  • Converting organic matter to biochar can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing waste. Biochar is made up of stable carbon compounds that sequester carbon into the soil.
  • Processing dead and dying trees cuts forest fire risk and insect tree mortality infestations.
  • Reduced particulate emissions by 75% compared to open burning, including PM2.5 and nitrogen oxide.
  • Reduces nutrient loss caused by leaching.
  • 85% reduction in solid material. 100% landfill diversion.
  • Sequesterstration of five thousand tons of carbon per year in cellulosic char amendments.
  • Cellulosic char significantly enhances crop yields by 10% to 38% within 1–5 years after application. Yields remain above 15% for more than six years.
  • Using organic cellulosic char reduces the need for industrial agrochemicals and unsustainable farming practices.
  • Applications of SS&C BioChar products are eligible for EQIP funding under the USDA Conservation Practice Standard for Soil Carbon Amendment, Code 336 (Code 808 for now in most states).
